Kovalam and the beaches on celluloid

Compiled by travel.manoramaonline.com

Kovalam. The name conjures up pristine beach, a candy coloured light house at one end and a crowd of tourists and hawkers on the bay. Kovalam, is one of those first places to find a place on the tourist map from Kerala. Now for a bit of documented history. In the late 1920s, the then Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmibhai of Travancore constructed resort at Kovalam called the Halcyon Castle. It gave a strategic view of the beach and the European visitors in the kingdom were among the first to realise the potential of this place. Later, it became a favourite haunt for the 'hippies' who made their way to Kerala in the seventies. Within a couple of decades, Kovalam shot to prominence as one of the best beaches in Kerala. A lot of Malayalam movies were shot there in the 1980s and 90's. And Bollywood came to Kovalam too. The 1983 movie Inqulab had a song sequence starring Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi in these beautiful beaches.

But the Kovalam of present times is not really what you see in this clip. It is a full fledged tourist centre with countless hotels and resorts and eating joints. The beach here is generally safe and the coast guards will tell you if it is safe or not. If you are an adventure lover, there are options for snorkeling and scuba diving here now. At the Kovalam Surf Club experts will teach you the basics that will help you become surfers. There are a lot of ayurvedic massage centres that will help you relax. You can also relax at the Eve's beach and the lighthouse beach
