Thekkady

Thekkady in frames of Kerala on celluloid

Compiled by travel.manoramaonline.com

Think Thekkady and the first thing that comes to your mind are the elephant herds frolicking in the river, spice scented plantations and the Periyar. A boat cruise on this lake is an experience in itself. You get to see the elephant herds up close here. If you are lucky you can spot other animals too as it is close by the Periyar Tiger reserve.

There is peace and tranquillity in the air. And you have got a glimpse of it from the various movies shot here. In the movie 'Dil Se', Mani Ratnam takes us to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady after Alappuzha. Nature's bounty at its best, we have wilderness, romance and more heat in the frames; SRK romances Preity Zinta -clothed again in a purple short blouse and dhoti-like pants with golden border - that remains in your mind forever.

Way back in 1987, Bollywood had brought Thekkady to the screen with Ijazat, starring Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah. The camera pans in on Thekkady in the first part of the song 'Katra katra'. The unit of 'Gupt: The Hidden Truth' came here too. It was for the song 'Bechainiyan' starring Bobby Deol and Manisha Koirala

'Sollitaley Ava Kaadhala' from the movie 'Kumki' was also shot here. Directed by Prabhu Solomon the movie stars Vikram Prabhu and Lakshmi Menon

A ten day schedule for the 'Hiss' starring Malikka Sherawat was also shot in the forests around Thekkady. Thekkady is a hot favourite with the Malayalam movie industry too
