Bekal Fort in frames of Kerala on celluloid

Compiled by

Romance talks a different language – especially in the movies. And when it is the ace director Mani Ratnam calling the shots, there is no denying the fact that he brings out the best. A.R. Rahman’s heartwarming music, a picturesque location and the perfect cinematography by Rajiv Menon gave us the memorable ‘Tu Hi Re’ song from the movie Bombay. The pretty Manisha Koirala and Aravind Swami added to its charm.

Set against the backdrop of the 300-year-old and well-preserved Bekal Fort built during the times of Shivappa Nayaka of Bednore, this song does justice to the monument. The director has made sure that he shows the highlights of the Fort in the sequence. The proximity to the sea, the lush greens – all of it is so much a part of this song sequence. The Fort is one of the biggest in Kerala and the director has made either Aravind Swami or Manisha Koirala pass through its most strategic points. The camera pans in from the choppy ocean just outside the Fort to the observation tower which was constructed during the days of Tipu Sultan. It is from here that the camera pans across the Fort. We see Aravind Swami waiting for his ladylove on the tower. And it is from here that Manisha Koirala sees him at a later scene in the movie.

if you visit the Bekal Fort, you can see the tunnel that Manisha Koirala ran through. It opens towards the south of the Fort. And the lookout point from which she sees Aravind Swami is a favourite with the photographers for the spectacular view it offers. The Fort, during its heydays, served as a strategic military center. From Shivappa Nayaka to Tipu Sultan and then the British East India Company, the Fort is so much a part of the history of the land. Bombay was one of the movies which put the Fort on the tourism map. The state tourism department has also improved the facilities at the Fort. Of late, the Fort has become a favourite filming location and various regional language movies, music albums and TV serials are shot here.
