Picture this. A bus chugging along a narrow road between paddy fields, a river gurgling along, hills and coconut trees dotting the landscape. Add old mansions to the mix and you get the sleepy town of Ottapalam which is a favourite movie shooting location. This natural charm of a rural area is what endears Ottapalam and its ancient mansions to a movie maker.

Ottapalam town is cluttered with small shops that sell anything you need, but to see the true beauty of the place you have to move outside the town. And you will be greeted with paddy fields – a lush green landscape. And there are old mansions which are centuries old. Certain scenes from the Mohanlal-Sumalatha starrer Thoovanathumbikal directed by Padmarajan, which later attained a cult status was shot at the railway station at Ottapalam. Ace director Padmarajan has made this scene so simple that it stays in your minds for ever.
Of the old buildings here Varikkassery Mana, is a hot favourite among the movie makers. This old house shot to fame after the success of Mohanlal starrer 'Devasuram'. The portico of the house with its intricate woodwork is beautifully portrayed in the song 'Angopangam 'Devasuram' was just the beginning. The house soon became one of the most sought after destinations for the Malayalam movie industry.

The Malayalam movies Aramthampuran,Drona,Madambi,Rapakal,Thoovalkottaram,Simhasanam followed. The affinity the Malayalam movie makers show this beautiful old mansion has made its fame spread over to the neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Shaji Kailas shot his movie 'Jana' here. Jana also had other nearby areas in Palakkad as location. Recently, Vijay starrer Kaavalan was canned at Varikkassery Mana. Another famous old house is the Olappamana Mana, yet another favourite with the movie makers. It is situated about 10 kms from Ottapalam. Various movies like Narasimham, Aakashaganga, Elavamkodu Desam, Naran, Drona, Madambi and the recent hit movie 'Ennu Ninte Moideen' have been shot at Olappamanna Mana. The Tamil movie Autograph was also shot here. Anangankunnu, a small hillock about 10kms from Ottapalam was one of the locations of the movie Muthu starring Rajnikanth and Meena.
