Palakkad and the frames of Kerala on celluloid

Compiled by travel.manoramaonline.com

Green fields, Malampuzha dam, a street that houses Brahmins, an old fort and a couple of quaint railway stations. Palakkad in the movies is all this and then a bit more. The gentle breeze kissing the tall grass near the Yakkara bridge, the border areas near Pollachi have found their place in numerous movies. The beauty of this land is enhanced when the rains cascade. The hill side erupts in various hues of green you never thought existed.

The proximity to Tamil Nadu makes Palakkad one of the most favourite places for shooting. From time immemorial Malayalam movies have been shot in the quaint place. Malampuzha Dam and the gardens was a favorite haunt for the Malayalam movie industry from as far back as the 80's. Elaborate sets used to be put up – floating castle once- for a Padayottam.

The movie, multi starrer was made at Rs 50 Lakhs in 1982. The bridge near Yakkara has featured in a couple of movies. The song 'Enthinu Vere oru suryodayam' starring Mammotty -Shobana from the flick Mazhaethum Mumpe was shot here.

So has Bollywood come to this lovely locale? The answer is a definite yes. Remember that scene in 'Virasat' where Anil Kapoor arrives with his girl friend played by Pooja Batra at a small station? That scene was shot at Muthalamada railway station.

The best way to explore Palakkad is to hire a cab and drive around. Drive to the outskirts, they still retain the charm that you do not get elsewhere. You will see some quaint old shops and a lot of friendly people.
